Making Sense of Autism (Mis)information in an Age of Mass Media
This colloquium will explore how autism is portrayed in today’s media landscape and the impact of misinformation on public understanding. The presenters will examine common pitfalls in media coverage, such as sensationalism, stereotypes, and the spread of outdated or inaccurate information. Through real-world examples and case studies, the session will highlight how misinformation can shape narratives and influence policy, practice, and perceptions of autism. Attendees will learn practical strategies for evaluating media sources, identifying bias, and promoting critical media literacy. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of centering autistic voices and experiences to ensure accurate and respectful representation.
